Allen Iverson doesn’t expect his fractured right ring finger to feel better anytime soon. Taking time off down the stretch, with the Denver Nuggets fighting for a playoff spot, simply isn’t an option. So, he’s learned to accept the pain. Not that the finger affected him Friday night. Iverson scored 28 points, going 9-of-12 from the floor, as the Nuggets blew out the Toronto Raptors 137-105 for their fifth straight win at home. The Denver guard hit seven straight attempts before missing a 3-pointer early in the third quarter. He also made all 10 of his free throws. “It felt OK before the game,” Iverson said. “Now, it feels that much worse. It’s throbbing like a heartbeat.” Iverson, who hurt his finger against San Antonio a week ago, slips on a brace after every game per doctors orders. “If I didn’t wear this brace to keep it straight after every game, there’s a chance it will get worse and I’ll have to get a pin,” he said. Yet he refuses to wear anything on the finger in a game. “I’m just real superstitious,” Iverson said. Nuggets coach George Karl would like to get Iverson some rest, but there’s no time, not with the Nuggets currently on the outside glancing into the playoffs. They trail Golden State for the last spot. “I don’t think we can lose a [player] because of an injury the rest of the way,” Karl said. “It’s the time of year where we have to play like it’s a playoff circumstance. Everybody is hurting a little bit — AI is probably at the top of the list.” The …

(2009) Kobe Bryant torches the New York Knicks for 61pts – the most ever by any player at the Madison Square Garden. Its a blessing to do what you love and to have moments like this. That’s how Kobe Bryant described his historic performance. With perhaps the need to lift up his team following the news of Andrew Bynum’s knee injury, which will sideline him 8 to 12 weeks, KB amazed the MSG crowd by scoring 61pts and leading LA to a 126-117 win over the Knicks. Kobe started the game by hitting his first three shots and was clearly in attack mode. He scored 18pts in the first quarter and finished the half with 34pts – 2nd most by a player this season behind Melo’s 36. He added 12 more in the 3rd and spent most of the 4th at the foul line, sanking one free throw after another. Kobe’s absolutely stunning offensive performance was rewarded by chants of “MVP” and cheers from the MSG crowd as the reigning MVP left the game with 2 min remaining. He was better than Michael Jordan’s 55 in March of 1995, the old record for an opponent. He was better than Bernard King’s 60 against the Nets on Christmas in 1984. His 20-for-20 performance from the line on Monday was second only to Dominique Wilkins, who sank all 23 of his free throws against the Bulls in Dec. 1992. Bryant, who also finished with the highest-scoring game in the NBA this season, left to a loud ovation after the 24th 50-point game of his career. He recorded his fifth career 60-point game, the second most in NBA history …
For the Chicago Bulls, today’s performance was worth the wait. Chicago spent all season looking forward to a playoff rematch against the Orlando Magic, the team that eliminated the Bulls last year in the second round. This year’s ECF is Chicago’s chance for revenge. And in Game 1, revenge was both sweet and spectacular. Playing a magnificent game with passion and precision, the Bulls embarrassed Orlando, 121-83, to open the four-of-seven-game series at the United Center. It was a loss that could have disastrous consequences for the Magic, because Horace Grant suffered a hyperextended left elbow in the third quarter when he collided with his teammate Shaquille O’Neal. X-rays taken of Grant’s elbow were negative, but he left the arena in pain and he was listed as questionable for Tuesday night’s Game 2 in Orlando. If Grant cannot play, Orlando will have even more difficulty matching up with Chicago’s frontline. And even before Grant left today’s game, this was a thorough beating from the start, and Orlando was on the receiving end of the spanking. The Bulls outrebounded the Magic by an incredible 62-28 margin. Chicago opened the game with such emotion, Orlando looked like a boxer who had been stunned early, and the Magic never got off the ropes. Two minutes into the game, Chicago led, 10-0, and Michael Jordan had yet to take a shot. It was only a sign of things to come. There was no need for Jordan (21 points on 9-for-17 shooting, 7 rebounds, 4 assists) to carry the offense …
Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich employs “Hack-a-Shaq” within the first five seconds of the first game of the 2008-09 season. After Shaq’s offseason comments about the tactic, Pop thought he’d bust the big fella’s chops, but Shaq would answer by nailing 5-of-8 free throws later in the game.
