Classic Game Room presents a CGR Undertow video game review of Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine for the Sega Genesis. While Sonic is nowhere to be found, his arch nemesis Dr. Robotnik’s is featured in this westernized version of the Japanese puzzle game Puyo Puyo. In the same vein as games like Tetris, Dr. Mario, or Columns, you’ll drop and match different colored beans and set up combos and chain reactions to take out your human or AI opponents. The gameplay from Puyo Puyo is completely intact, but in this case they’ve added villains from the original Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon show from 1993. Mag may not be the most prolific shooter ever created but Sony’s PS3 exclusive shooter is made for massive multiplayer games and succeeds. Short on style but high on action, that’s MAG in a nutshell. Smooth online games with up to 256 player battles and very little wait time between matches. Headset compatible with lots of people playing and numerous combat style engagements, MAG excels where so many other shooters fall flat on their face. On the downside for some is the fact that MAG is multiplayer only, so the fun only lasts as long as people are playing it. MAG is like a combination of Warhawk and Modern Warfare 2. Well designed multiplayer boards and fast paced combat with upgrade ready machine guns, sniper riles and heavy weapons await PS3 gamers. The game borrows plots elements from the movie and adds a few new twists, namely villains such as Venom and Sandman. This overlooked gem belongs in any Sega fan’s aresonal of virtua fighter games because the gameplay is solid, smooth and predictably virtua awesome. It includes a characters not seen in the excellent Virtua Fighter 2 and has improved visuals and backgrounds that are far superior to anything that the Saturn could deliver. Virtua Fighter 3 is sure to please fans of the series, even if the Dreamcast controller is a bit awkward for arcade and fighting games. Pick up this excellent budget Dreamcast game today and kick some virtua ass.
